Girls on the Run: Team Expansion
Girls on the Run
$3,440
Girls on the Run, a Fond du Lac School District Program, received $3,440 to support the expansion of the program to all Fond du Lac middle schools and elementary schools. The goal of Girls on the Run is to positively improve the emotional, social and physical development and opportunities for girls 3rd-8th grade as well as help address the problem of childhood obesity.
Since the inception of the program in January 2012, over 700 young girls have had the opportunity to participate through teams at Chegwin, Riverside, Roberts, Rosenow, Pier, Parkside Elementary Schools, STEM Academy and the Boys and Girls Club/YMCA.
For the 2017-18 school year, Girls on the Run will be expanding to 19 teams of 15 girls and increase the number of unduplicated girls participating by 20%. In addition to the participants training to run a 5K, they take part in a 12-week curriculum that teaches healthy living, goal-setting, cooperation, healthy decision making and self-respect.
Between 285-342 elementary and middle school girls are expected to participate this year.
