Girls On The Run Fond du Lac Signature Program

Fond du Lac Area Women’s Fund has selected Girls on the Run Fond du Lac as a signature program for the next five years.  This program not only aligns with the collaborative Fond du Lac Says No More: Preventing Violence against Women & Children initiative strategy, but the program curriculum, working with girls in grades 3rd through 8th grade, focuses on self-confidence at an early age, and encourages positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. The Girls on the Run program culminates in a celebratory 5K run providing a tangible sense of achievement for the participants.  This year’s run takes place on May 12, 10:00 a.m. at Lakeside Park. While the run is a closed event, the community is invited to cheer on the girls as they run.

Girls on the Run is a 10-week transformational learning program for 8-13 year old girls that teaches life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. Started in fall 2012, the program began with 8 girls at Riverside Elementary. The 2018 program is now at 275 girls from 18 teams/sites, including public & private schools throughout Fond du Lac, as well as Eden Elementary and Campbellsport Elementary. Girls on the Run Fond du Lac is an Independent council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of 200+ locations across the United States and Canada.

The Fond du Lac Area Women’s Fund invests in Fond du Lac area women and girls through grants to local programs that empower women & inspire girls. The organizational grant giving and local programming efforts focus on four priority areas – education; leadership development; financial self-sufficiency; and safety, dignity, and freedom from violence. The Girls on the Run Fond du Lac program was selected as a signature program because of the positive impact on young girls, as well as the beneficial influence on parents and within families. Additionally, knowing 54% of girls do not have high body esteem and are missing out on key opportunities in life, the Women’s Fund sees extraordinary benefit in fostering confidence building to set more local girls up for success. Regional studies continue to report gender gaps in areas like college degree attainment, political representation, executive/leadership positions, entrepreneurship, and more.
