Fond du Lac striving to become a hub in women’s leadership.
When you think of women’s leadership in the state, where does your big, beautiful brain take you? Perhaps you think of one of the major cities in our state – Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay… or a great company making waves in this area?
Here – in Fond du Lac – we see a giant opportunity to add to that story in Wisconsin. There is so much amazing work happening behind the scenes in our small city, and it’s about time we celebrate and expand upon it!
Why is this important for Wisconsin?
Based on the Status of Women in Northeast Wisconsin Report completed in 2017, we’re seeing the following gaps and/or growth opportunities:
Statewide, women hold 17% of seats on the boards of directors of Wisconsin’s largest public companies and 16% among private companies.
Women-owned Businesses = 31% Wisconsin; 27% NE Wisconsin
Women hold 24% of elected offices in local government, about the same as statewide.
More than one-quarter (27%) of women in the region have a bachelor’s degree or higher. A total of 38% of women in the region have a post-secondary degree when we add in associate’s degrees.
Businesses, organizations, and communities will all be strengthened as the women and girls in our state receive more support and education. We create stronger female leaders, right here in Fond du lac, by shifting how we define and understand the issues facing women and girls in our community. Leading oneself – specifically strong self awareness – is a critical first step: a “rising tide lifts all boats.”
What can you do to get involved?
We are thrilled to share that Fond du Lac is one of two host locations in Wisconsin, with Wausau being the other, for one of the largest conferences focused on women in leadership: Leadercast Women. This conference is not just “how to” advice, but moreover it is long-term lessons in life and leadership helping you grow into the leader (and person!) you’ve always aspired to be. Join us as we learn what it means to “Lead Yourself”.
